Stop #12 Washington DC

Hello bigride fans
Well, I did it. I made it. Hard to believe but it's done. I want to thank everyone for all the love, support, and prayers that you have given me the last two summers. Before I say a few last words about my adventure, I want to tell you all a few stories about today. As you know I stayed at a Bed & Breakfast last night. I made a little mistake about who paid for my room last night. It was paid for by the UMC from Paris, VA. So, thanks a lot and sorry about that.
I left this morning before 6:00 am after having a nice egg and toast breakfast. I was very excited about getting to that trail and having an awesome ride into DC. Uh, yeah. Well 5 miles from the B &B my trailer fender comes off and rotates to the front of the trailer tire and gets jammed. It made a terrifying noise and locked up my tire. I was scared to death. I looked at it and discovered all I needed to to do was to take the fender off and keep going. No big deal, right? I made it to the trail about an hour later and started to relax and enjoy the tree lined, asphalted, double wide bike trail called the W & OD Trail. ( Washington and Old Dominion )
About two hours later I see a guy walking with his bike on his shoulder. I asked him if he needed a tube? He said yes but that he didn't know how to change a tire. I felt like a brain surgeon all of a sudden. I showed him how to change the tire and gave him my spare pump and another tube. He offers to give me twenty bucks for helping but I flat out refused so he told me he would help someone else when he gets a chance. I thought that was cool. He was a very nice guy.
About 10 miles later, guess who got a flat tire? Me!! Some guy goes buy and mentions that he had just seen me helping some guy with a flat. Yep. Some kind of Karma, but I'm not sure what kind yet. About 5 miles later the part that holds my wheel and trailer together comes apart. Luckily it happened at a stop sign. If it would have happened a few minutes before when I was flying down a hill, it would have been disastrous. So I had to pull of the bike trail and fix that so that I could continue on my journey. As I got closer to DC I had to pick up another trail called the Custis Trail. Bad part is, I don't know where I'm going! Luckily I met a great guy named Allen. Allen offered to escort me into my destination. He was supposed to be heading home after his ride but he told me he wanted to be a part of this. I was very happy to have his company and enthusiasm. He told me a couple of times, " you can do it Tom, your almost there!" I was very tired and he raised my spirits because he was excited for me. When we pulled into DC, he started going " you did it man, you did it!" He even let out a couple of hollers. It was great!!!! He is a fellow cyclist and he understood the accomplishment that I was finishing up. I am very grateful to Allen. Thanks man!!!!! Allen had to get home so he helps set me on course for my hotel. It's on the other end of DC and I had to go through a very tough part of DC. It started to seem like I was going to end up in Maine. I was pretty sure I was only a few miles away when guess what happens? FLAT TIRE!! Yep, #2 on the day. One flat tire on the first day out, two flat tires on the last day. I was only one mile away. 1 mile. So, I fixed another flat knowing that I only have one more spare tire. As I was coming over the next hill, I saw the Holiday Inn!!!! Words cannot describe how much relief I felt at that moment. I was able to check in and take a shower before the King Krew arrived. My day was complete. Thank you God for delivering me safely. Later in the day we went to the Mall and saw some of the sights. Washington DC is a very cool place to visit. We are looking forward to seeing as much as possible over the next 4-5 days.
This has been an amazing journey. On a personal level, I have accomplished something very difficult and I have suffered physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. But through all of the suffering I have had an Ace in my pocket. Caleb's spirit and strength have guided me during some very tough times last summer and this summer. I am always going to have that and that makes me feel truly blessed. Caleb was an amazing kid because he has amazing parents, family, and friends. He has a ton of people who love him and feel his inner strength too. Please never forget what Caleb did to inspire you. The Zarzecki's appreciate all of your love and support for them and the entire family. I am thankful that I am a part of the Zarzecki extended family. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you continue to heal during this tough time in your lives.

For the most part, this is my last blog. We are still going to have a few bowling fund raisers next year so I will post about those or other things we might have going. But the "bigrideking" has left the building. I have done what I have set out to do and it feels great. We will continue to fund raise for our 2012 Caleb Zarzecki Memorial Scholarship Fund. Hello again
Well what can I say about leaving West Virginia?? Hmm? Thank you Jesus. Here"s the deal with WV, all mountains, no shoulder at all, and fast driving motorist who are in a hurry to get somewhere? Not sure where because I never even saw a Wal-mart. ha ha. So as I rode into Virginia today I started feeling all happy inside because I could tell I was out of the Appalachian Mountains. Make note to self, do not ride through West Virginia ever again! Got it. Ok.
I am staying at a beautiful B&B just south of Purcellville, VA called the Middlegrove Inn. The great people over at the UMC in Purcellville have offered to pay for my visit tonight. I made a delicious pizza and went for a swim about an hour ago. That felt amazing and I feel refreshed and ready to finish up the ride tomorrow. They have a rails to trails trail that goes from Purcellville to DC, It's about 45 miles and paved, I think already told you that? Oh well, I'm excited because it's going to be safe!! One more day of keeping the rubber side down and I'm home free.
I'm almost done with my cross country journey, hard to believe. I hope that I have inspired at least one person out there to do something out of your comfort zone? Run a marathon or half marathon. Start exercising? Help someone out? Make new friends? Get back on your bicycle? Donate to a charity or to a cause? Volunteer somewhere? Because of this journey, I have been able to do all of these things. (except the marathon parts!! ouch ) I am really proud to do this in honor of Caleb. He has been on my mind a lot when the physical pain of riding was getting to be unbearable. I can't imagine how much he went through but I feel his strength was with me on this entire trip.

Stop #10 Romney, WV

I am in Romney West Virginia now. This part of the country is spectacular. I would love to come back in the Fall!! Ok, the mini-mountains are now just called mountains. These mountains have broken me a few times. I have had to walk my bike up several hills again. I was fortunate to get a ride through some of the most dangerous and deadly parts of the mountain range. Highway 50 has no shoulder at all. I did not expect that. I decided to go ahead and get a lift from Rich. I 'm not so sure that I would have been able to make today's 85 mile trip without him. Thanks Rich, you are a lifesaver!!!! Saturday is going to be a great ride into Virginia. I'm told that the mountains are going to get smaller from here on out? I hope!
Sunday's ride into DC should be amazing too. They have a rails to trail bicycle trail that goes into DC from 45 miles out and it's suppose to be asphalted. So two more days till DC.
I wanted to say thanks to those who made comments on the blog during my trip. It means a lot to me and I just want to say thanks. " thanks!"

West Virginia is beautiful. I have been treated to some of the most scenic views ever. It really is amazing how beautiful it is out here. The hills/mini mountains have been challenging for sure. Today towards the end of my ride I had get off the bike a few times becuase I couldn't ride up some of the steep hills. The last 20 miles were kinda scary because of the lack of a shoulder.
Thanks to Pastor Jeff Winters and Dotty. Jeff took me to dinner and Dotty helped get me set up at a local motel. Thanks for helping me out and good luck at your new church Pastor Jeff.
Grafton has a lot of history. The first Union soldier died here in a scirmish. Mothers day was started in Grafton way back in the day too. Pretty interesting old town. Friday it's on to Romney, WV. 3 more days of riding. I'm looking forward to shaving and seeing my family.

Hello everyone
Hi mom. I am being safe and I love you too.

Well it's been another wonderful day. The ride today was warm but I heard that Thursday is going to be a little nicer? I am in the Appalachian mountains now. The little ones is what I have been told. I spent a lot of time climbing mini mountains today. The good part is the coasting down the opposite side. I have decided to not use my breaks (thanks Jen).
I met a guy today around Ellensboro, WV named Milton. We had a nice talk about life, marriage, loss, and retirement. I always enjoy it when someone wants to sit and have a visit and share stories. Thanks Milton, your conversation was enjoyable and came right at the right time for me. Keep on singing!!!!!
Tonight I am staying in the UMC. The church recently celebrated it's 150th year. Wow!!
Pastor Dave and his family took me out to dinner tonight. I appreciated the food and the company. Thanks for the hospitality!!!
Tomorrow I ride on to Grafton, WV. I am assuming that the climbs are going to get more difficult? So I am going to call it a night and get some rest for the next ride. Cya TK

Hello bigride fans
Today was a beautiful ride. I almost got rained on but I made it to a Marathon gas station minutes before a down pour. I was glad to be able to ride on a bike path for a short time today. Pastor Katherine called me and told me about some construction on highway 50. She gave me some great directions and worked me around all of it. I actually got to ride right by Ohio Univeristy. Ever heard of it? Beautiful campus and facilities. Katherine offered to take me to dinner tonight so I had a wonderful meal, thanks Katherine. I really enjoyed your company and I appreciate you offering me a place to sleep at the church! Thanks a bunch!!!!!
Yesterday was pretty boring. There is not much to do in Mcarthur, so I slept, stretched, and watched a lot of TV.
Jennifer asked what was on my sign? St.Louis to Washington DC in honor of my friend Caleb Zarzecki.
It's starting to come apart a little from all the high speed down hills I've been blasting down. I actually like climbing hills once I get my mind right. Going down the hills is a little more scary!!Should I maybe use my breaks??? HHmmmm. That's about it for tonight. Thanks for reading and sharing about Caleb and my blog. Hello everyone
Today is my last rest day. I needed a break to be honest but it's also tough sitting around. I'm glad to have a room and not to be in a tent. I have 6 more days to riding until I reach DC. I am looking forward to seeing this next part of the country. The hills are much more do able now that I am prepared and getting stronger on the bike. Riding early in the morning as been very beautiful. I know it sounds crazy but Sunday/Fathers Day was my best day on the bike so far. I only saw a couple of tractor trailers the entire day instead of a couple every minute. With that said I also want to give a ton of credit to the motorist and truckers who have passed me so far. I have been given lots of room by almost every single driver!!! Thanks. Tuesday I ride to Coolville,IN. The next stop after that is West Union, WV. I plan on taking more pictures if I see something wirth photgraphing. So far it's just been lot's of rolling hills and fields. I hope everyone is doing well out there. Don't worry about me, I'm doing much better and enjoying every moment of my journey. I will be posting every night that I can the rest of the trip. Keep the safe trip prayers heading my way!!!! Cya. I am feeling much better and avoiding the heat and rain as much as possible. I really enjoyed my time in Dillsboro. The people I met at the church, vacation bible school and the pantry were amazing. I stayed the night with an older couple who were as nice as could be. I really enjoyed spending time with them at the food pantry and lunch at Linda's. This town and it's people were so open and kind anit just felt so comfortable. It was like stopping in Mayberry. Thank you Marge and Van. I was also glad to have met Tom. He is one of the pillars of the church and community. He's an art teacher, artist, and plays guitar as he puts it. Thanks for getting me to the other side of Cinncinati!!!!! That would have been scary with out you. Thanks Tom. Since I didn't have any connection for my stop last night, I went on to Hillsboro so I could get a room instead of camping. When I went in the gentleman working there told me that he wanted to pay for my room. I was very thankful and we had a great conversation about politicians and DC. He told me to take a message to them from him. "don't forget about us!" I told him I would pass it on as soon as I got there. Nice guy at Cedar Hills Motel in Hillsboro, OH. Thank you!!
Today I rode into McArthur, OH. I'm staying at a little motel and taking my last dayoff on Monday. Oh yeah, Happy Fathers Day Dad and Grandpa Rogier, and Michael Michael and to all the other dad's out there!!!! In one week from today my family will be meeting me in Washington DC. Yeah!!!!! Day #3 Brownstown, IN

Hello again. Hot, humid, and HILLS!! I thought Indiana was flat?? Wrong, not on highway 50. Yesterday was very challenging for me. I am very thankful to have an off day today.
I was eating at a Bob Evans yesterday and a few of the people starting asking me about what I was doing? When I went to pay for my lunch the manager gave me $20.00 in Bob Evans bucks for my next meal. I thought that was nice and unexpected. As I was walking out and older couple stopped me to ask if they could give a donation? So they handed me another $20.00 to help out the cause. It's amazing how generous people are!! Thank you goes to those people, not for the monetary gift but for their kindness. Thanks.
I had a dog come running at me later in the day. The woman comes out yelling not to worry he doesn't bite. I wanted to say, " yeah not you!" All I was seeing was teeth, thankfully the dog retreated back home. Towards the end of the ride I was really tired. I was about 10 miles away and resting at a quick stop store and chatting with a motorcyclist. This gentleman pulls up out of know where and asked me, " you need a ride?" It was like an Angel appeared. He told me that the highway was pretty dangerous on the way to Brownstown. I needed a break and took him up on the offer. He is a fellow cyclist and said he had passed me twice while running errands in the area. We had a great conversation. Thank you Larry!
When I arrived I met Pastor Damon and his wife Debbie. They have been very kind and open with me. I was invited by them to assist with Vacation Bible School last night and today. I really enjoyed being around kid's again. We had fun and I made a few more friends. I really connected with a boy named Kyan, he was awesome. At the end of the night Pastor Damon introduced me and asked me to share a little about my journey. That was cool because I had another chance to talk about Caleb and my faith. I'm looking forward to helping again tonight.
Today I had to go to a bike shop. I looked at my tires when I got here yesterday and I noticed that my tires were really bad. I'm not sure why but it looked like they were just falling apart? Maybe the heat and the fact that I'm trying to ride on the very edge of the road? So, I had to get new tires. I'm thinking that they might have blown out if Larry wouldn't have helped me out, that's how worn they were. Angel?? hhhmmm
Today I am relaxing and recovering!!!! I imagine I'll sleep a few hours too? I hope everyone is doing well and I will post more on Friday if possible. Cya, TK

Day #2 Washington, IN

Sorry I didn't blog yesterday but the weather has really knocked me back. I should have started with few a less miles to begin the ride with? The good news is I have not been rained on yet. I was fortunate to have a room last night at the Baymont Hotel courtesy of Rev. Lennie Lawrence and the congregation of Christ UMC. They also made a $100.00 donation to the Caleb Zarzecki Memorial Scholarship Fund. Thank you for your amazing hospitality and generosity!!!
Not a whole lot happened on day #2. I felt pretty zapped again by the end of the day. Luckily they had an indoor pool so I did get in there to cool off for a while. I tried to eat something at Ponderosa but I didn't have much of an appetite. Then the severe thunderstorms blew through. It was a bad storm and I was thankful not to be in a tent somewhere. Thanks again to Rev. Lawrence!!!!!!!

Hello.
Was it hot and humid in Troy today too? Man, I got zapped today. I'm glad to have the first day out of the way. I rode almost 90 miles today. It took about 6 1/2 hours so you can imagine how tired I am. Everything went well though it was hot. I did have a flat tire already. I was almost to Breese. I rode through 3 states before I got my first flat tire last year. This year I didn't even make it to 3 counties before getting that flat. Oh well, now it's out of the way, right?Highway 50 is pretty busy but almost every vehicle got over for me, my left arm got tired from waving thanks so many times!!
I wanted to say thanks to Pastor Smith and friends from the UMC in Flora for putting me up in the Best Western. Thank You!!!! I also just did an interview with Danielle from the local paper. She was very interested, polite, and I enjoyed talking with her. It's kinda cool because it's going allow more people to hear about Caleb. Thanks Danielle.
I'm pretty wiped out so I'm going to go crash. I'll try to post everyday but if I don't please forgive me. Cya

huge success @ Jefferson yard sale

What a great weekend. Ms. Jefferson and friends had a ton of success at the yard sale this weekend. $1,300.00 was made to be donated to the Caleb Zarzecki Memorial Scholarship fund. Thanks to everyone who donated items, helped set up, or made a purchase at the yard sale. Several friends have asked how they can donate? If you would like to donate go to any (FCB) First Collinsville Bank and ask to donate to the 2012 Caleb Zarzecki Memorial Scholarship Fund.

I leave Monday morning around 5:30-6:00 a.m. Down to the wire now. I've been riding almost everyday so I feel good and I am looking forward to this summer's journey!!!! Hey, it's down to 13 days. I've been riding everyday and my legs are feeling pretty good. Not loving getting up early to ride but it's great preparation for the DC ride. I did an interview with the Troy Tribune the other day, I think it's going to run the Thursday before I leave???
* I wanted to say thanks to the Jefferson Crew. They had a bowling fundraiser several weeks back and raised $1,200.00 for the scholarship fund. Wow!!! Thanks to everyone who participated and planned that fundraiser!!!!!!
* The scholarship fund is now up to $7,439.00. I am very impressed with our current total and I am confident we will reach our goal of $10,000.00 for the 2012 Caleb Zarzecki Memorial Scholarship Fund.
* Michelle Jefferson is having a garage sale with all proceeds going to the scholarship fund. It's going to be June 11th & 12th. More information will be in the Troy Tribune about this event.
If you want specifics give me an e-mail at tking1@kahoks.org The items that are going to be there are going to be worth checking out. Michelle told me that her garage is getting filled up and that there is something there for everyone!!! If you have some great items you would like to donate, get ahold of me and I'll give you some details!!!

Three weeks until I leave for DC. I finally got a chance to get on the bike again this weekend.
I rode 30 miles on Saturday and 25 on Sunday. It felt awesome to be back on, but my butt is killing me.(too much information?)

Tuesday is our last day and then it's summer time!!!! Yeeeeeeees!!!

I leave in 4 weeks for Washington DC!! I can't wait to get started. I'm hoping the weather here will be a little nicer soon. Special Olympics

Hello bigride fans
Last weekend the Special Olympics had an event at SIUE. Two of our student-assistants from our Middle School Basketball Program participated. Our 8th grade assistant Corey K. competed in the 10 meter run and the softball throw. Before competing in the run I had a chance to sit and talk with Corey. He noticed I had a bottle of Mountain Dew and asked if he could have a drink? So I said sure and then watched him down an entire bottle in record time. If there is an event for fastest MD drinker, Corey would have won the Gold in that event. So, I am going to take 1% of the credit for his Gold in the run, at the cost of my fresh MD. Corey won Gold medals in both of the events he entered in.
Our 7th grade assistant Marcus B. competed in the softball throw and the 5o meter relay. Marcus also won two Gold medals at last weekends event. I was very proud of how Marcus handled himself during an uncomfortable moment on the podium. There was another boy who felt that he had won and he wasn't very happy. Marcus was very humble and low key while accepting his Gold medal. I thought that showed a lot about his character during an uncomfortable situation.
I am very proud of both of these boys. They are both great people and awesome role models.
Congratulations Corey K. and Marcus B. !!!!!!!!!!! You guys rock!!!!!

I went for a 35 mile road bike ride this weekend, ooouuucchhh!!! My butt was sore. I had to ride the last 5 miles or so standing up. But, I'm back on the bike so I am stoked!!! Cya, Tom

We had a great time last Saturday night at the Caleb Zarzecki Memorial Scholarship Fund bowling night. We were able to fill up about half the bowling alley. Everyone had a great time and we were able to raise some money. Thanks to everyone who attended and thanks to those who also donated. Thanks everyone. The bowling night last Saturday for the Caleb Zarzecki Memorial Scholarship Fund was a big success. We had over 60 people there to bowl and to raise money for the scholarship fund. I would like to thank Big Art Hartman at Camelot, his family and his staff for a wonderful night at the bowling alley, thanks!!!! I would also like to thank everyone who attended or made a donation. Because of your heartfelt donations we were able to raise over $700.00. The scholarship fund is now over $5,000.00, that's half way to our goal. I am going to put up some photos if I can get a few of the participants to send me a couple of pictures? Thanks again to everyone who is supporting this endevour in one way or another.
I leave for D.C. in two months ( June 14th ). I look forward to sharing more stories with everyone. Thanks again and tell a friend!!!! bigrideking

Good morning
I had to cancel the bowling night and my ride to Washington DC. April Fools!

The bowling night is fast approaching, April 10th. I think we have all of the tickets sold for the most part? If you are still interested in attending, please contact me asap.

The weather here has been amazing the last few days. I had a chance to go mountain biking yesterday at SIUE and I had a blast. I forgot how much fun it is to mountian bike. The trails are well groomed and wide open right now. I was surprised that I didn't see another rider the entire time I was there. If anyone is up for a mountain bike ride sometime, get ahold of me, I'll go!!!!!!!

I guess that's about it for now? I'll blog again after the bowling fundraiser and let people know how it went. Take care and check back again around the middle of the month for another update.

Hey, can you believe it's already March? I've been busy with making arangements for my journey this summer. So far I have made plans in advance with 6 of my 11 stops. It looks like I will be lucky enough to stay at more Methodist churches. I want to say thanks to Pastor Dennis Price in Troy for giving a character reference for me to anyone who has called or e-mailed him.

Here is what the journey looks like so far:
Leaving on June 14th, first stop is in Flora, Illinois.
Next stop is Washington Indiana, then Brownstown, then Dillsboro.
From there it's on to Fayetteville, Ohio, then McArthur, and Coolville.
Then it's on to West Union, West Virginia, then Grafton, and Romney.
My last stop will be in Purcellville, Virginia on June 26th.
I ride into Washinton DC on the 27th and meet my family.
We are going to spend 4 nights in DC.

Hello big ride fans
Well it's the first of February already, wow!!! I have some information about the bowling fund raiser for the Caleb Zarzecki Memorial Scholarship Fund and the bike ride to Washington D.C.
We will be having a bowling fund raiser during the month of March. We will probably have it at Camelot Bowl in Collinsville. I would like to pre-sell tickets again this year. My hope is to find 10 people who will get 9 of their friends together for a fun night of bowling. Are you interested? I will be riding my bike to Washington D.C. this summer as planned. I am still looking at departure days but I am pretty sure it's going to be during the week of June 6th. I think it's about 900 miles so this should be alot easier compared to last summers journey. I hope that everyone will be supporting me again in this amazing adventure? I will be making more post now that my 7th grade basketball season is over. ( We finished 18-3, tied for the conference championship)

Happy New Year to everyone!!!!!! I hope that anyone who reads this had a wonderful Holiday Season too. I spent a lot of time at home with my family just hanging out. As much as I enjoyed it, I was ready to get back to work. The way I look at it is this, the sooner we get back the sooner we get to summer. I am looking forward to summer already. I can't stand the cold!!!! I have another 3 weeks of 7th grade basketball then I will start to focus on this summers adventure to Washington D.C. My goal is to have some information put together by the beginning of February about the bowling fund raiser and my chosen path to D.C. Thanks for keeping up with the blog if your still reading???? Hard to believe another month has zipped by. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We had turkey dinner at our house with Jens parents. I am very thankful that my wife is such a wonderful cook!!!!! I've already put all the weight back on that I had lost on my ride last summer. Oh, well that's part of being busy. I have been thinking about my route. I think I'll go more south across than north. So I plan on going through parts of Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia, and Virginia before arriving in Washington D.C. The trip is about 900 miles. I'm thinking I can ride it in 14 days? Compared to last summer, this is going to be easier so I want to challenge myself with more daily miles. As soon as I mave more details about my route I will post them.
I also plan on having another bowling fundraisier for the Caleb Zarzecki Scholarship Fund. I will be looking at February or March and I will be posting information about that as soon as I get it all planned out. Not a day goes by that I don't think about Caleb. Sorry I'm a day late but I have been very busy with 7th grade basketball. We were fortunate enough to win our CMS tournament this past weekend. We beat Wirth Cahokia 34-25 in the championship game. I am going to post a picture of the boys because I am extremely proud of them!!! Way to go Trailblazers!!!!!
I am still planning on going to D.C. this summer!! My plans have not been made yet, but I will pass on any information as soon as I get things figured out. I am still planning on having a bowling fund raiser some time in February for the Caleb Zarzecki Scholarship Fund. We are still taking donations. Just go by a First Collinsville Bank and ask to make a donation to the fund. Anything you donate will be greatly appreciated!!!!!!! The fine people from the Collinsville Herald have contacted me about doing another article?? So keep an eye out for that in the next week or so. Thanks for all of your support, it means a lot to me, the Zarzecki family, and anyone else who was touched by Caleb's life. We all still love him and miss him!!!!! Thanks friends,

I hope all is well with everyone? Things are moving fast for me. My son Lucas ( 12) is playing football for the Troy Titans. He has flicked a switch this year and really developed into a good football player. Kellen ( 7 ) is staying busy too. 7th grade basketball tryouts are Friday and Saturday this week. I hate this time of year because I have to cut kids. But I am also excited about getting a new season started. I will be very busy the next 3 -4 months but I will be posting information still at the beginning of each month. I still plan on doing another bowling night and I think Robin Zarzecki and I are going to put another fund raising evening together? So stay tuned, I will let you know more soon.
I am looking for some input. The ride this summer will be from St.Louis to Washington DC. Does anyone have any experience with the best way to get there by bicycle? I know it's going to be more populated going east so I'm just looking for some advice before I start the planning process. I made it home!!!!!! To everyone I met along the way, thank you. To everyone who prayed for me or kept me in your thoughts, thank you. To everyone who was here to greet me as I came down the road, thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!! That was incredible. It was the highlight of my trip. It almost felt like I was dreaming. I can't thank you all enough. Another $200.00 in donations came in yesterday, wow is all I can say!!!!! Since I can't say thank you to each of you personally, I want to say it to everyone right now. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!
As I mentioned a few days ago, I will make a post at the start of each month. I will give you as much information as I can about what is going on with the scholarship fund. Robin and I are going to continue fund raising efforts so this is a great way for me to let everyone know what we are doing. For now, that is about it. I will post again at the beginning of September.
I am Blessed to live in this community and to have had all the support I have had from everyone from Seattle to Troy/St.Jacob. Thank you and I will talk to you later. Cya 4 now Tommy K

I am not sure how many more post I will make in the next few days so I want to share a little more information and a poem.
1st. It's all about Caleb, the Zarzecki's, you, healing and faith. I am Blessed by all of these!

2nd. I will keep my blog going. I'm not sure about next summer yet? I want to get home, relax, reflect, spend time with my family and get ready for school to start. I want to talk about next summer with my wife and family later to see if St.Louis to Washington D.C. will work or not? I am sure everyone understands what a sacrifice it is for my wife and kids. So, I will post on the blog once a month at the start of each new month to keep everyone up to date on what's going on.

3rd. I want to share a poem from the end of the book that my friend Bob gave me in Harlowton MT. Even though the ride isn't done, I wanted to make sure I posted it before I got back home. The poem is called Back Again

Hello everyone
Today I rode a little slower than yesterday. I knew I only had to ride 45-50 miles and I was kinda sore from yesterday. Here's why. When I crossed over the Mississippi I was feeling pretty darn good, as you can imagine. I was riding on 96 south for a couple of miles when I looked back to check for traffic. I noticed a couple of cyclist were about a half mile back or so. I started to feel the competitive juices flow. I got down on the areo bars and jacked up my speed to about 24 mph. I knew the town of Atlas was about 8-10 miles up ahead so I cranked it up hard. I thought, " I've been riding for 6 weeks, I'm in Illinois, and I'm going to beat them to Atlas. I looked back a couple of times but I continued to separate from them a little so I kept cranking even harder. When I got to Atlas, I pulled over and snagged a drink from a machine. As these two guys came into town they slowed up and kinda looked at me. I said, " hey I was kinda expecting you two to catch me?" The one guy says, " we weren't trying." Ok. Sure. Right. Come on man. They both had very nice bikes and looked to be in pretty good shape too. Now I know when I'm riding and I see a cyclist, I can't help it, I try to catchem. I was pooped though. My legs were pumped and my lungs were screaming, but I tried to look completely rested. When will I ever grow up, right? So today I really felt it, ooouuuchee wawwa. When I got to Hardin I was set on getting a motel, but they were already booked up. Faith. Yep, I just relaxed and asked if she had any ideas on where I could stay? The minister from her church was out of town so she had me call an elder named Dwight Ringhausen. He invited me to come stay with him and his wife Millie just south of Hardin on the family farm. Wow !! This farm has been in the family for over 100 years. Dwight's grandpa built this house in 1904. The wood work is absolutely incredible. The house and everything in it is amazing. The recorded history here is just mind blowing. The setting is right out of heaven, in fact I would call this place a slice of heaven here on earth. Millie and Dwight are two of the kindest and most interesting people anyone would want to meet. Again, I was made to feel like family. We had a wonderful supper tonight. ( I really really loved her oriental coleslaw!) Jen, I got the recipe. For dessert she made a hand made gooseberry crumb pie.
OMGG ( oh my goodness gracious ) :) Have you ever had gooseberry pie?? Well, I never even heard of it, but I love it. Thanks for making me feel so welcome here. I can't wait to come back and visit you guys with my family.
If you two are ever near Troy, you have to stop by, ok? Thanks again.

Hello again
Today was a wonderful day to ride a bike. It was overcast with very little wind. My main goal was to get to Illinois. When I got into Illinois I realized that there isn't much around where I was. I decided to ride on until I found a campground or a UMC. I found neither but once again, a little miracle happened. A woman and her son were selling peaches at the intersections of
IL 96 south and highway 54. Her son had a Hardin TTO t-shirt on (TTO = triple threat option) it's a football thang that I remembered from our summer camps from several years ago. She and I both know former THS football coach Ric Johns, so we had a lot to talk about. She shared with me that there was a motel down the road to the west 7 miles. When I got to the motel, I shared my story and I ended up getting a discounted room. Isn't that amazing? Thank you to the people from Mississippi Valley Lodging, I appreciate your kindness!!!!!!!!!!!! So, I am just east of Louisiana, MO.
Riding from Shelbina with a purpose, I made it to Hannibal pretty quick. While I was resting at a gas station I met two more wonderful people. Marci and Barb. They are from Durango, Colorado. Marci is a cyclist who is in the process of finishing up her dissertation. She has already rode across America and looks forward to getting back on her bike. I was able to share Caleb's and my story with them. I always feel re energized after a conversation like that. Thank you for stopping and for being willing to talk with me for a few minutes. Be careful on the way home and GET BACK ON THAT BIKE WOMAN!!!!! lol Take care.
I'm pooped. I rode over 70 miles today. I feel strong but after 60 miles, it get a little tough both mentally and physically. I'm not complaining, because to be honest, I can't believe it's almost over. Three more days and I will be home, I can't wait to sleep in my own bed. You know that feeling you get after a long day of work and you know your going home soon? Multiply that by 7 weeks and that's what I am feeling right now. This has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. I owe that to my family, Caleb, all of you, and everyone I have met on this journey of faith and healing. Thanks everyone. Shelbina. This was not actually on my places to stop, but I'm so glad I did. I've been kinda winging it here the last few days to be honest. Today when I pulled into town there was no one around at the UMC. So, I went back to the First Christian Church I had just passed a few minutes ago. There I met the secretary and Jim. Reverend Jim, or just Jim as he likes to be called. He invited me to stay at his home. There I had a chance to shower, rest, eat, meet his wonderful wife Becky, and have another amazing experience. They fed me like a King ( a real King). We had great conversations about Caleb, past experiences, current issues, and Faith. These two people are the kind of people you wished you had as parents and or friends. 36 years of love and marriage, and I can tell they are best friends. I will never forget you or your cute little dog Alley. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Highs and lows, again

Well I have lots to share. Today I am going to start with a low so I can end on a high note. When I left the Holiday Inn this morning, I was feeling great. ( more on that in a minute)
I'm going to try and keep this rated G, so it's going to lose a little as far as the story goes.
I wasn't even a mile out of town when I thought I heard something pop? I looked back and saw a Blazer way back so I looked down at my trailer pins. As I was looking down and back I went of my, (the) white line a little. As I got back over and breathed a sigh of relief that nothing was wrong, the guy in the Blazer tried to make some kind of a point by swerving over at me. I gave him a big thumbs up as if to say, " nice job!" My blood was boiling!!!! No, I didn't tell him was
# 1. He started waving his arms all crazy and he pulled over 1/4 mile up ahead. Hhmm. I felt myself accelerate and the adrenaline kicked in. I saw red. I was about to unleash my negative energy all over this guy. Before he even got out of the car, I realized I'm not going to do anything. I'll let him say what he wants and I'll kill him with kindness. As he gets out of the car it looks like he has a bee in his shirt and a few down his pants. He's waving and tossing his arms all around and using very inappropriate language. Have you ever seen the Cubs manager Lou Pinnella argue with an umpire? That's what this guy looked like. I stepped of the bike and listened to him go off on me. He said a lot of things but his biggest gripe at me was that I wasn't all the way on the other side of the shoulder. He said he's had to call the Sheriff on other cyclist before because they were doing the same thing I was. After several minutes I asked if I could speak? I said, " Sir, you don't know me, who I am, or what I'm even doing." He cut me off and started railing me about my stupid bike this and my *^&*# bike that. So I said to him again, " I've listened to what you have to say, can I speak or not?" Not even two sentences in, he cut me off again. I told him I was sorry, and I started to pull away. As I went by his vehicle I saw a teen aged girl in the car slumped down from embarrassment. I felt bad for her and glad for me that I didn't put that guy to sleep. I said to her as I passed by, " your dad needs to cut back on the coffee!" She kinda smiled and kept her head down. Thank God for clear thinking!! Whew.
Ok, that was the low or the bad point in the day. I had a couple of highs that blow that little bit of bad out of the water. This morning while I was getting ready to leave two cool things happened.
First. A gentleman came up and asked who I was and what I was doing? He said he lives in St.Louis and that he and his friend could take me there if I wanted them to? I thought about it for a split second but I want to finish this journey. He asked if he could pray for and with me? He did an amazing prayer. It was kinda like he knew me or knew what I needed to hear in that prayer. I said Amen, like never before. I didn't get his name because I don't always hear to well and I'm usually embarrassed to ask again. But I do want to say thank you to him. I know he took down my name and blog site so I hope I can make a connection with him and get his name.
Second. While I was getting my things ready to leave a news reporter from the local television station in Kirksville called to ask if he could do a little story on me? So right before I left he showed up and did an interview in front of the hotel. He was a super cool guy. His name was C.E. We had a short little interview and he said it would air tonight for about 20-40 seconds during the news cast. Isn't that cool? He told me he would e-mail me a link to the story. As soon as I get that, I'll try to get it up on the blog. Thanks C.E. So as you can tell, it was a day of extreme highs and an extreme low. Man, I'm glad I'm a calm, laid back person.
I rode on 63 south and 36 east today. Bad choice on 36. Scary conditions. Massive construction zone. Tons of traffic and big truckers with little to no shoulders. My nerves were shot by the time I got here in Shelbina, MO. I decide to stop for the day and find a place to stay for the night. I'll post more about my stay tonight in another blog. So for now, all is well.

Hello again
I called ahead to the Kirksville UMC thinking I could make my connection ahead of time? Bad idea. I got rejected I think for the first time?? The Pastor said they just couldn't help me. No, I did not get freaked out. I knew something would happen and it did. When I went through Moravia I saw the school. I went in to fill up my water bottles and met Angie. She was an amazing help. She made a bunch of calls for me and tried to get me set up in Kirksville for the night. I also met the librarian, Rosemary, and she too tried to make some calls for me. I told them not to worry about it and that I had Faith that something would come through. I left for Kirksville and when I got here I decided to treat my self to a Wendy's Frosty ( they are good!) So I turned around to sit down and I saw Rosemary in there. We sat and talked for a little while and had a great conversation. She even decided to offer me a place to sleep at her house. Angie had just called me a few minutes before to ask if I had had any luck and to ask if I was missing my riding gloves. I said no and uh, yes. She told me that her boss Bill Lake, would put me up in a hotel if I wanted to do that and she could bring my gloves since she lives in Kirksville. So I thanked Rosemary but I decide to take the hotel room instead. They put me up in a Holiday Express for tonight. Man, I am a fortunate guy. I can't thank all of you enough, thanks thanks thanks!!!!!
The more I try to plan things the more I get discouraged. The more I just lean on my Faith, the easier everything becomes. Not just Faith in God but Faith in kindhearted people. I cannot count how many times people have taken care of me on this journey. So, to everyone out there who I have met, thanks. I was having a conversation this morning with this man and a woman. He said he needed to find some Faith in people. I told him it starts with us. It's ok to say hi to people and to be friendly with everyone. If it's not returned, who cares, at least you were giving. I think he understood exactly what I was saying. I hope they both share our conversations with the people that they come into contact with on a daily basis. I really feel like we could all do a better job of being kind to each other, it starts with us. I was able to share my story with several people today. It really helps me get energized and to appreciate just how lucky I am. Caleb is special to hundreds if not thousands of people. I know I am only one of many who was and is touched by my relationship to that boy. I owe it to him, the Zarzecki's, my family, and everyone I meet to carry his inner strength and share it with everyone I come into to contact with. We can all share what he means to us by how we interact with everyone. Sorry, I'm not trying to get deep, I just want everyone to know how much he helped me become a better person. I'll bet most of you know exactly what I am talking about if you ever met this guy.
Tomorrow is suppose to be a 85 mile day. I'm not sure I'm up for that many miles since I rode 70 today. Did I mention all the hills? Oh yeah, I'm sure I did! lol So, I will post as soon as I can and let everyone know where I am and what has happened. Oh, I was stoked to finally get into Missouri, only one state away!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yesterday was a joy!! Here is a saying I am gong to live by, "He who laughs, gets laughed at."
When I went into Knoxville the other day I decided to stop at a McDonald's and grab some food. A wonderful retired PE teacher on a bicycle stopped to talk. As we were talking an older guy walked by and said, " bet you thought Iowa was flat?" He walked into the restroom laughing to himself and I think, at me? He is right, I think most people assume it's flat? I did. But after a few days of headwinds, horrible highways, and hills, I figured it out pretty quick. It has been tough but like I have said before, I kinda enjoy the suffering.
I couldn't find the Pastor in Moravia so I went into this little motel called Angel's. The owner there asked me a few questions about what I was doing? She then gave me an amazing rate on a room. What can I say, it just seems to work out if you just keep the Faith. Thanks to everyone at Angels, the food was great too. We had a thunderstorm last night but I guess i didn't hear it? HHmmm, I wonder why?

* I forgot to share a few things. The morning when we left De Smet, I met a guy outside the motel who had a car flat. He was in the process of riding across the country for MS. I forgot to share the story because of the mechanical problems, sorry. His name is Gabriel Redding. He is a musician and a real nice guy. He gave me a couple of CD's but I have not listened to them yet. You can check him out on facebook I think??? Just wanted to make sure I said hello to him and his business manager. Good luck the rest of the way!!!!!
* Met a guy names Scott outside of Spencer or Stuart?? He works for Goodyear. Great guy and we had a great conversation. It's nice to have so many interactions with kind hearted people. Take care Scott and thanks for the encouragement.
* Today I went into Knoxville to try and log on but the library doesn't open there until 10:00. So as I was leaving I pulled into a little store and grabbed a Powerade. The guy working asked me about what I was doing? As I was walking out he stopped me and gave me a 20 dollar bill. He said, " Here take this, your nuts, this is the least I can do, good luck!" I laughed and told him thanks. It was a kind act that wouldn't have happened if I wouldn't have went through that town. Kinda cool. So, that's $60.00 from just three people on this trip, that I never expected!
* Al Lamier. Al is a long time friend of everyone at the Cyclery and Fitness in E-Ville. He let me use his B.O.B. trailer for this journey. I never said thanks? Al, thank you. The trailer has been working great. I'll have a little something for you when I return it next week! Thanks man!

Hello again
Yesterday I rode into Indianola, IA. The ride went pretty well. For the most part Iowa motorist are very kind. The roads are not. You know how it sounds when you drive on a road like old highway 50? T tat t tat t tat t tat t tat and it has a nice flow to it? Well on a bicycle it's more like Ba BAM Ba Bam Ba BAM. Did I mention the lack of shoulders too? I thought my tires were going blow off one way, my tubes disintegrate in the opposite direction and my spokes splinter off into oblivion. Every now and then, peace. I would hit a section and it was smooth as ice, aaahhhhhh. Did I mention hills and headwinds??? My legs are as sore as they have been on this whole trip. I finally have some days in the saddle though so my butt is not sore at all, that is a good thing!!!
I stayed in one of the biggest churches I have ever seen. Beautiful. I hope the picture does it a little justice? I didn't get to meet Pastor Kay Hooper, but I did speak to her on the phone. She was very kind and I want to make sure I say thank you. Thanks Pastor Kay to you and the church family. So I am on my way to Moravia still today. I think it's only 10-15 miles from here. Sorry I couldn't post the last couple of days. I didn't have access to a computer. Right now I am in a little town called Albia. I am stopping at the public library so I can post and let everyone know I have not been hit by a car. Just kidding! Stuart was very nice. I had to show somemore faith. I had spoke to Pastor Bob the day before and he knew I was coming. But when I got there no one was home and he didn't answer his cell. I sat down and relaxed and not long after that couple of younger guys came the church to clean. When they were leaving I explained my situation and they let me in. Shortly after that Pastor Bob got back from a hospital visit. He and his wife went to the hospital to see a friend from Pastor Clara's church. When they got back they allowed me to take a shower and then took me to dinner. I really enjoyed my time with them. They are both pastors with new assignments. They shared some personal stories and some spiritual stories with me. I could have sat and talked with them a long time. Good people, their churches are Blessed to having such wondeful people to lead them. Thanks again you two!!
The rest was pretty uneventful. Hills and headwinds.

Sorry if I scared anyone yesterday. The truck was actually 10 feet away. ( wink wink ) Today was another beautiful day in Iowa. The motorist continue to give me lots of room, thanks Iowa drivers! The wind was tough today. I think it was a 20-30 mph constant headwind. I have been riding 18-23 mph, today it was 10-12 mph on the down hills. I think I laughed too soon at the "hills" because today they got me at the end of my ride. I am tired and sore, I take it back hills!
Last night I went to dinner at the Sac County Cattle Company restaurant. I felt like treating myself so I ordered a salad, baked potato, steak and a Coors Light. The steak was perfect and so was everything else. I had a wonderful waitress and we had a chance to talk a few minutes. She asked about what I was doing and I told her all about Caleb and the bigride. When it was time to pay she told me the dinner was on the house. I was shocked, I told her I should have ordered a burger. She laughed and I was kinda at a loss for words? Thank you to everyone at the Sac County Cattle Company for your kindness and for a wonderful meal.
Today when I got to Coon Rapids I stopped at the UMC here. No one was around so I made a few phone calls and was put in touch with Pastor Lynn. He came to the church and the both of us sat on the lawn in the shade and had an incredible conversation. We both shared some personal stories and shared our thoughts with each other. It was another powerful interaction for me personally. Thank you Pastor Lynn for sharing a part of yourself with me!! I also want to thank your church family for letting me stay in the church tonight! Thanks.
I talked to my mom yesterday, that always cheers me up! Hi Mom.

Today was a trouble free ride. I had great weather again today and nothing broke! Yeah!!!
Northern Iowa has a lot of rolling hills. I thought it was all flat? No big deal though, they are only mounds at best. The worst climb was about 1/2 mile long. haaaaaaaa I laugh haaaa haaaaaaaa But, I did have to go up a lot of them and they did start to burn towards the end of the ride today. I'm not sure why, but my seat felt like a brick today??? Seriously, the first 20 miles, it felt like I was sitting on a brick. I figure it's because I haven't put many consecutive days together yet. I hope it feels softer tomorrow morning. People in Iowa are very cyclist friendly. I don't think they have a choice because there are very few miles on the secondary highways that have any shoulder at all. For almost the entire ride I was inside the white line. Scaaaaaaary! Almost every driver would get into the other lane or they would slow up and allow the other car to pass first, then get over to the yellow line. I was impressed. I waved big thank yous all morning. By the afternoon my arm was tired so I started nodding. I did have one close call. I was riding along and I heard this whooo whooooo I thought I was hearing a train, but I had not seen any tracks in a while. There were no cars coming towards me? Whhooo whooo I got over to the white line and this trucker went by me at 70 something mph and missed me by two feet. But, that was the only one of the whole day, so thanks to all the cyclist friendly drivers out there today. At one point out on the road today I looked to the west and counted over 100 wind mills on the horizon. It was very cool and kinda strange to see that many. Before this trip the most I had ever saw was the three in Marine.
When I got into town I stopped by the UMC in town and met Pastor Vicki Fisher. She offered to put me up in the Sac City Motel instead of having me stay in the church tonight. Wow, another little Blessing. Thanks to Pastor Vicki and the Sac City church family for helping me out tonight. I got to my room and thought I was going to rest for a second, but then I fell asleep in less than a minute. I was exhausted. I 'm at the library here in town now and I am about to go get some food. Thanks for the prayers!!!!!!!!! I'm off the Coon Rapids, IA Friday.

Today was another wonderful day in the saddle. I had great weather and a little tailwind to ride in. I met Dennis in Sanborn, IA at a burger joint. We had a wonderful conversation about many things. I really enjoyed sitting and talking with Dennis. Thanks Dennis for sharing your story and for your encouragement. I decided to go all the way to Spencer and wing it. I was going to camp but the cost of that wheel yesterday is still stinging. I pulled into the First Christian Church and went to the office. I was speaking to the lady there when Pastor Dan walked in. He said I could stay in his basement tonight because his family is out of town. I was Blessed again with another act of kindness. I'm glad too because I just went to a bike shop here in town and my chain is shot. So I guess I can apply that camp cost to the chain instead. Just like my body, the bicycle is breaking down. Just kidding, I actually feel very strong right now on my bike. They have a few rolling hills here in Iowa but nothing like I already went through so I feel really good. I have been thinking about Caleb a lot today. I was able to share the story with a few interested people and it helped me deal with some of this adversity the last couple of days. I have been doing a lot of silent praying the last couple of days and it has really helped. One of the lady's at the Chambers of Commerce in Worthington wished me good luck yesterday while I was trying to figure out the back wheel issue. I told her that I don't need luck, I have faith!! And it all worked out. ( somehow?) I plan on riding to Lakeside, IA on Thursday.

Highs & Lows Stop # 23 Worthington, MN

Hello again
Yesterday I rode into Worthington. Low, I had to say goodbye to the family. High, I had a great tailwind. Low, the road was terrible for the first 15 miles, very rough hard bumps. High, the weather was perfect and the road got smoother. Low, I pulled into Worthington and discovered my rear wheel was knocked way out of true ( I thought). I knew something was wrong so I started asking about the nearest bike shop. Nothing for 60 miles in each direction. I took a closer look at me wheel and realized that my wheel is cracked. Not fixable, broken. I started asking strangers if they knew any cyclist? Nope. I went to the Ace, Ac Delco, a Karate place, then finally to the Chamber of Commerce. I called all the bike shops within a 75 mile radius and no one thought they could help? High, finally one of the bike shops made contact with a cyclist in town here. Gary called me and told me he could call his friends at the bike shop he uses in Sioux Falls. After he got off work Gary and his wife Nancy picked me up and drove me 70 something miles to a bike shop. Low, I wasn't expecting this expense but it's one of those things you can't plan for. High, they had a lower end wheel so I didn't have to pay $500.00 for a new back wheel. So, my day ended on a High note. I really never got that upset. I knew that I would get through it if I just stayed calm and continued to silent pray. Ahhh Adversity, learn to love it and deal with it. So I am getting back on the road this morning. Everything is fine, the weather is amazing, I'll have a tailwind, and my spirits are high!!!!! I am going to wing it today and Thursday. I feel good so I am going to just ride until I want to stop the next couple of days. I will let you know more when I get to my next stop.

Yesterday it was back on the bike. Highs and lows. We had a great time on our vacation. Our second night in DeSmet we stayed at the Prairie House Manor in DeSmet. It was the bankers house back in the 1880's. We really enjoyed the stay. Andy and Jen are from New Jersey. They came out to DeSmet last year for a vacation and loved it so much they bought this B&B and stayed. It's a great story and if you ever go visit DeSmet stay there you'll love it. So, thanks Andy to you and your family, we appreciate your kindness. While I was there in DeSmet I called ahead to my next stop in Balaton, MN. I was told I could not stay there at the church because something had happened. So I decided to just get to my next stop instead, Worthington, MN. My family dropped me of just inside the Minnesota state line, so I only had a 45 ride to my next stop. Worthington, here I come.

Family Vacation ( Finally)

Well what can I say?? Last night we had a great meal and swam at the motel pool. Today I took them to see Devil's Canyon. It's about 10 miles west of Custer. I wanted to show them the hills I had to ride up and down. I think they were a little scared??? Then we went to Mammoth Site. This was really cool. A sink hole developed over thousands of years and swallowed up mammoth's and other animals that went to close. The dig is an ongoing excavation and is just amazing to see. I recommend it for sure. Then we drove through Custer State Park. That too was incredible. We had a chance to see lots of wild life and buffalo's up real close!!! We then went to Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. I can't say enough about Crazy Horse, you have to go see it. This guy was an amazing and his family continues the dream of completion. When is going to be completed? That is what I would like to know!!! Very interesting and pretty much an amazing undertaking. I was here 20 cough cough something years ago and to be honest, it doesn't seem to have changed much???? HHHmmm? I don't have much more to share for now. I hope all of you enjoy your weekend as much as I am going to!!!!! Cya bigride supporters!! TK

Today was spectacular!! I am glad I rode! It was very challenging to say the least and very scary at points. I had to ride through Devils Canyon. Lots of tight switchbacks and little to no shoulders to ride on. The climb out of Devils Canyon was killer. At one point a turtle came up along side me, she smiled and accelerated up the hill leaving me in her dust. Then her brother came up along side me, he put his claw on the back of my butt and he pushed me for a little. Highs and lows, highs and lows. You know, if I didn't have this big ol trailer attached to my bike, this would all be so much easier I told him!! LOL What I miss is being able to stand up and throw my bike side to side and stomp on the peddles when going up. With the weight in the back I am forced to sit and slow peddle up all these hills. But my legs are getting stronger!! It's all good. I really enjoyed seeing all these beautiful hills and mountains up close. Now I can say, " good bye hills!" Flat land! Flat land! Flat land!!
I am going to take a couple of days off but I plan on riding Saturday in Pierre, SD. Just to keep the legs dialed in. Well my family should be here very soon, can't wait. I remember the first couple of day's out of Seattle, all I could do was think about this moment!!! Now it's here.
Time goes by so fast. Enjoy everyday. Enjoy every conversation and interaction with whomever you are with!!! I will post again soon bigride fans. Thanks for all the support so far. Off day in Newcastle

Today I slept in until 9:00 am. That was nice. When I got up I took a shower and had a cup of hot chocolate. That was nice too. Simple pleasures we all take for granted, I know I do. Thanks again to Debbie and the Christ is King Lutheran Church family!!! Debbie suggested I go the visitors center and Anne Miller Museum today. I spent about a half hour talking the gentleman at the visitors center, that was educational. I then went down the street to the museum. Very cool and extensive little museum. It's held in a former 1930's 115th Calvary Wyoming National Guard quarters. The building was constructed out of hand-hewn sandstone blocks, quarried from nearby Salt Creek. The museum is named after Anna Cecelia McMoran Miller, a daughter of a pioneer family, and widow of Sheriff Billy Miller, who was killed by a Sioux Indian in what is known as the last Indian battle in this area. She was Newcastle's first librarian, a pioneer schoolteacher and superintendent. There are a great amount of old artifacts from the Indians, cowboys, the Calvary, fossils of T-Rex and others from the local history of the town. I spent a couple of hours there and I really enjoyed it. So if you ever go through Newcastle Wyoming be sure to check it out.
I've decided to go ahead ahead and ride the 37 miles into Custer, SD Thursday morning. After speaking with a few more people about the road situation and careful consideration, I figure it can't be worse than some of the roads I've travelled on so far?? It's also suppose to be an absolutely beautiful part of the country. Sold!! Watch out truckers, RV's, and tight two lane roads with no shoulders, here I come!!! Just got a text from Jenn and the boy's, there at the hotel in Sioux City, IA. Can't wait to see them tomorrow! I will try to post a few brief blogs while I am with my family, but no promises. Ouuuuuch. Today hurt. Terrible. Painful. Windy. Dry. Windy. Vast dessert land. 18 wheelers. Two lane highways, little to no shoulders. Windy. Almost 90 miles in the saddle today. There were times today when my bike and trailer would be moved 2-3 feet to the side because if the cross winds. My thumbs cramped up from holding on to the brake hoods so hard. There was not one single place between Gillette and Newcastle. Mile after mile of road. Endless amounts of road is what it felt like today. My legs were feeling it towards the end of the ride. Ok, enough whining. The ride also was very beautiful. If you like desserts? I only saw one roadside tree that would provide me some shade, ONE! lol Ahh just one of those days. I had a lot of time to think today, a lot!!!! I thought about how lucky I am to be able to take on an adventure like this one. I thought about how hard of a time I was having today and yet I was still enjoying myself. It sounds like I was miserable, but I was actually laughing at times today?? Not sure why, but it's true. I also new in my mind that I had a day off on Wednesday, that helped. I got into town and found the church. Christ the King Lutheran Church. I met Debbie there and she helped me get settled in. I really enjoyed my short conversation with Debbie. She is one of those people that when you meet her, you wish you were one of her close friends. She seems awesome!! Debbie has offered to take me to Custer on Thursday. She says that the 30 mile ride there is not bicycle friendly at all. She even expressed her concern for my safety. So I am going to think about that tonight?? I'm thinking about riding there and back tomorrow on my "day off" I'll let you all know! I'm double posting since I couldn't get to a computer yesterday. I also couldn't get any reception on my cell phone. The weather was bad last night. A huge storm rolled in after 10:00 pm. Today was kinda cool and overcast. I had a real nice tailwind and my first flat tire. To be honest, I've been looking forward to it. Yep, you know it's going to happen. People have been asking me how many flat tires I've had so far? jinks??? thanks! Now I can move on to other thoughts. If you ever want to clear your mind or think about one thing for a long time, go for a looooong bike ride. Some days I look at the line and just relax and have no thoughts. Other days I spend hours thinking about one subject. It's a good thing for me I'm an optomistic person, otherwise it would be miserable out here. So that is my thought for you today. Try to be a little more optomistic that pesemistic. And it's ok to say hi to strangers and smile. Unless your mom tells you not to that is. SMILE!!!
I had a wonderful brunch at a small airport north of town. It was kinda like the airport in Mascoutah, but the food was great. I was then heading into Gillette when I had my flat. The funny thing is my flat came from the inside. A metal bead punctured the tube from the inside. I went "old school" and put a folded up 1 dollar bill up against the tire between the tube and tire. It works great!!! So, I headed into town and started looking for the Fairfield Inn & Suites. thanks John for another awesome hook-up!!!!!
Tuesday and Wensday I will be staying at the Christ is King Luthern Church in Newcastle. The UMC situation didn't work out for this stop. I decided to call another church and everything fell into place from there. I sure am getting a lot of great breaks???? HHmmmm??? So, I will post somemore in the next couple of days or so. I get to see the family on Thursday!!!
* I have had a couple of friends ask about my arrival date. If all goes as it should, I will ride my bike into St.Jacob/Troy on August 2nd ( Sunday ) in the afternoon. Somewhere between 2:00 - 4:00 pm I hope. Thanks again everyone for all your comments, support, and prayers. Cya TK

Stop # 19 Arvada, WY

Hello everyone
Yesterday I rode to Arvada. It was like out of that movie Car's. Arvada is off the path like Radiator Springs. You drop south 4 miles off highway 16 onto a country highway. You go over a big hill and drop in to Arvada. The road turns into a country gravel road as you pull into "town?" I stayed with my frined Cre. Cre is an amazing individual. She is 65 and is one of the two school teachers in town. K-6th with about 15-16 students. She also owns cattle, horses, land, trucks, you name it. She has lived in these parts her whole life. She is cowboy tough, and I loved getting to know her. Cre's husband was a professional roper for years. I saw some of his belt buckels, man they are impressive. Cre told me he had given tons of them away so she started grabbing them first. Her kids are grown but they too are involved with horses. Her kid's played polo. They also played at the highest level ( Olympic ). Ever heard of Sartatoga? I do know. Cre is a perfect example of a woman who is cowboy tough. My only regret is that I will only be able to tell my closest friends all the stories she shared with me. Thanks Cre for everything,. You are an amazing woman, I am humbled in your presence. You rock woman!!!!
Enjoy your last year of teaching. Then you'll have more time for the ranch and everything else you do. I hope it's ok that I shared the black and white photo? The one from the cattle drive.

Stop # 18 Sheridan, WY

Good bye Montana!! No offense, lots of nice people, but two weeks is a loooong time! Hard to believe but I am still riding at elevations at about 4,000 ft. On the way to Sheridan I stopped in a small town called Dayton for breakfast. A retired couple on motor cycles started a conversation. While talking with them another couple started to ask questions and converse too. When I got up to go pay the husband of the other couple reaches out to give me a 20 dollar bill. He told me to put it towards that scholarship fund. Another act of kindness out of the blue. Thank you to both couples for your kind words, encouragement, and conversation.
Sheridan Wy is having Christmas in July. The rodeo is in town. It is a huge event here. The streets are packed with cowboys, cowgirls, and lots of little wranglers. Two and three year olds with boots and cowboy hats on. Unusual to me, but I can feel the heartbeat of America pounding right here. Pastor Don and his wife took me last night to see the rodeo. It was very exciting. Bareback broncos, roping, steer wrestling, barrell races, bull riding, and other events. My favorite was the indian relays. Each indian has to ride a horse (bareback) around the 1 mile track and come in and get on another horse, then repeat again. There are 3-4 people going at a time. The horses and indians are all painted up in traditional stuff. It was dangerous and scary but the skill of these yougmen was obvious. I was impressed and very glad to have this experience. Thanks for taking me last night Don and Zell and thanks for letting me stay in the church basement during my visit.

The Little Bighorn Battlefield was very cool. It's hard to imagine that all that happened. Once I was there though, I could visualize it, feel it, and imagine what happened. I hope all of you get a chance to visit there. I also had lots of conversations while there. It seems that when people see you are on a bicycle, you are a non threat. People are interested. I really enjoyed talking to one of the park rangers. He is a Special Education teacher in Colorado. I also spoke to a guy from Colorado about cycling. He was a delightful gentleman, and very interesting. I usually just listen. People are much better at talking than listening, that is what I noticed so far. But for me that is cool because I think I'm a better listener than talker. Which one are you???? HHmmm?? Next stops are Arvada, Gillette, Newcastle, WY then Custer, SD and the King's!!

Crow Reservation is beautiful everyone. If you ever feel boxed in, go spend some time in Montana. When I arrived at Wyola I went to the K-12 school. The lady's there were very kind. They asked the custodian, Leonard if he knew where I could sleep that night? He had an apartment that a teacher had recently moved out of available. It had AC, lights, a restroom, and a little couch. Thanks Leonard. And thanks to the lady's at the school, they made me a lunch while I was waiting for Leonard. I had a wonderful conversation with a lady about the reservation and life in Wyola. I pulled into this little station and I asked a guy for some direction. I asked if he could throw my stuff in his truck and drop me off outside of Billings. He said no problem. While I was telling Joe Wonder, (real name) my story, this woman pulls up. She asked me a few questions and asked about donating. I told her about the FCB scholarship fund but she wanted to donate now!!! She handed me a 2o dollar bill, said "God Bless you" and she pulled away. I told her, she was the first person to offer a donation on my trip so far. It was a very nice experience, I was touched. Thanks Becky!!!!!

Hello again
The ride to Hardin was incredible. The ride was on a road that has very little traffic. I think I saw 5 cars total. My mind couldn't help but to wonder. I could picture the Native Indians roaming the vast area. I could picture wagons and people working their way across the area too. Today was one of my favorite riding days for sure!!! Amazing!
I had some great fortune today. I couldn't get in touch with the UMC people? I called a couple of the other churches and guy from the Catholic Church called me and told me to go to the Lariat Motel. So the Catholic Church in Hardin picked up the bill for my over night stay. Very cool!!
I went to look for a place to get food and ran in to Sal. Sal owns a little shop and food joint. We sat outside and had a wonderful conversation. She bought my meal and gave me a free t-shirt from her shop. Thanks a lot Sal, you rock woman!!!!! I think that's about it for now?? I'm not going to take a day off on Thursday. I'm going to visit the Battle of Little Big Horn Battlefield during my ride to Wyola. I feel strong so I want to stay on the bike for now. Besides, the weather is going to be great and I should have a tail wind??? I hope! Cya, TK

Ok, here is another story. It is very hard to keep track of everything. Not an excuse, just a reminder. I'm not sure exactly what happened but JRP decided to stay back. I think it was after Thompson Falls or so? I was very upset. I even had a Tom Hanks ( Cast Away ) moment where he realizes his volleyball is gone. You know what I'm talking about. I was terrified about having to tell Kellen. So I waited and after a couple of days he asked how JRP was doing? I had to tell him," I can't find him and I am real sorry." I was expecting him to start crying and get upset and get mad at me! As I braced for the worst, the loving spirit of a child came through for me. He says, " dad, don't worry about it, Jr. Puppy actually knows how to servive in the wilderness. He has had experinece in the wilderness before. He can take care of himself." I was blown away. Days of extra weight off my shoulders with just three lines from my son!!!!
I think we as adults seem to over think and complicate things. Thanks for keeping it simple Kellen!! I love you and I look forward to seeing you soon!!!!!!!! Love daddy

Hi again.
I'm in Billings. I just wrote the last blog from here. Great ride here this morning. The hills are getting less steep, but the ones I have to climb seem sooooooooo long? I didn't realize this until yesterday but I'm still riding between 3,000 and 4,000 ft. elevation. The area is more dry now but the scenery still has a real beauty to it. I take pictures but I don't think it will look good enough on the blog?? I am going to go get some food next and get ready for the ride to Hardin, MT in the morning. Yep, still in Montana. I did have a guy stop and check on me today. His name was Kirk. My toes were getting numb and so was my rear bumper so I got off the bike for a minute and started walking. Kirk pulled up right away and asked if I needed anything? I was very appreciative he was offering, but I told him I was fine. He told me he was on his way to go ride with some friends. Yeah, they are going to ride 100 miles and do 10,000 ft. of climbing. Ok. No thanks. Have a great ride Kirk, you guys are craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy.
I'm not sure about being able to blog the next couple of days? Hardin and my next stop Wyona, MT are both on Crow Indian reservations. I am going to take a day off on Thursday and spend the day at The Battle of Little Big Horn. My dad reminded me a week or so ago that my great grandpa was Chereeke and my great grandmother was Choctow. I'm looking forward to it. Hello everyone
Last night I stayed in Lavina. It's a very small town in the middle of know where. I couldn't even get phone service?? I was suppose to stay at the city park, but i noticed a little Methodist Church on a side street. I went into this little shop and asked about the church. This nice woman named Judy called a woman named Cathy. I told her about what I was doing and she told me she would let me in. That was great because a couple of hours later, another massive storm blew in. I think my tent might have looked like Dorothy's in the Wizard of Oz if I would have been outside?? I also got to sleep on a couch. Little things like that are a huge right now.
I got out pretty early this morning. I was excited because a friend of mine had some extra business hours/miles/coupon thingies and hooked me up with a hotel in Billings. Not just a motel/hotel, were talking Marriott!!! Hell yeah!!! Sorry youngsters, don't use that word!! Anyway, thanks John!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I made it to Harlowton yesterday. I actually had one of my best rides so far. There were still ups and downs but they are getting smaller. I was also able to ride at 23-24 mph for a couple of hours at the end of the ride. I feel I am getting stronger and I am well rested. Last night I was suppose to stay at the Church. It started pouring so a neighbor named Robert came over and asked me if I wanted to stay at the Old Milwaukee R.R. Depot? It is this cool old station that they are in the process of restoring. Robert is a super cool guy and I really enjoyed his conversations and company. He once walked from Lavina, MT to New York. Lavina is my next stop by the way?? Thanks Robert. I also met a guy named Don. He lives across from the old station and is a retired railroad guy. He shared lots of stories about the station, the town, and some of his persona stuff. Very interesting guy.
Anyone wondering about JRP? I'll share that story on Tuesday.
B. The answer was bungy cords. If you ever need a bungy cord just drive along side these highways and you can find tons of them. Is there a resale value for bungy cords?????

Hello from Gods Country!!
Big Sky Montana. It is so amazing out here. I asked a woman in Helena about the rest of the mountains east of Helena. She told me that there were no more after Helena. Uh, maybe not compared to Glacier National Park. I thought I was done with climbing?? Not yet. Today was a very tough day in the saddle. Lots of climbing. One climb was over 3 miles long. But even through the suffering, I felt lucky to be in control. I thought about Caleb a lot today. This is his second Independence Day from pain. I thought about how lucky I am to have my family, an amazing community, great friends, and to be healthy. I was in a lot of pain today physically, but I felt so fortunate to be in control of it. I have been riding for two weeks now, it's hard to believe it's going so fast???

Well I am in Townsend, MT. The ride to the State Park was incredible. The ride to Avon was also amazing. Avon was one of my stops that I didn't have lined up for sure. I did speak to someone at the little school a few month ago but that was it. When I got into "town" I saw a little store and I went in. This is a store from the old days. It was the center of the world. The woman working was named Virginia. We had a great conversation and then she started calling some people for me to get one of the little churches open. She contacted Jeff Kessler who attends and lives next door to the church. He let me in and even allowed me to use his shower. Thanks Kessler family. They have an amazing family. Great people out here in Avon, MT. I wish I could spend more time describing the scene in that little store, what a hoot!! ( in a good way!) Today was an adventure for sure. I got poured on 15 minutes into my ride. It looked ominus, but it didn't look like it was going to rain. Yep, down pour on the way to Macdonald Pass. That is the pass over the Great Divide. Not as high as Stevens Pass in the Cascaeds, but the conditions were bad. It dried off on the other side so I went into a little store and held my stuff next to some bathroom dryers. Not a great place to be but I had to get me and my things warm. Good news, clean bathrooms and low traffic. Thank you God!!! So now I am in Townsend and the pastor here, Pastor Bob Foote has paid the bill for me to stay in the Mustand Motel. Not what I was expecting, but an amazing offer. Thanks for doing that for me Pastor Foote!!!! That's about all I have the energy for now, I will blog again when I get to my next stop.

Wel I made it to the top of the Summit. I know it wasn't a snow covered mountain but it was 5,ooo ft. I had a chance to do some inner thinking and get some exercise. People here are active and very friendly. The Mizzou visor draws a lot of attention but I don't mind because then I get to share my story about Caleb. I know today is a tough day for everyone who loves Caleb. My heart and soul goes out to all of you. I know how much he ment to so many people. It seems a though everyone admired his strength and positive outlook. I want to say a special hello to the Zarzecki Family today. You are on all of our minds, please remember how many different people your son touched in his short life. He is missed but his life changed others.
Thanks to the Cluphf's. Great people!!! Words can not say how much your kindeness has ment to me. Thanks you, thank you thank you... Oh, and yes Jennifer ( great PE teacher!) It's Dr. Dave Cluphfs P's.

I have been unable to get to a computer so I will get everyone caught up. I tried to get some new pics up but it wasn't working for me, I'll try again later.
Stop # 7 Thompson Falls, MT. Wow, hyw. 200 is an amazing road!!!! I can't even begin to describe it!!!! On the way I was going down a hill and I looked back and one of my pins broke and part of my trailer was hanging off, should have been a crash. I was pretty jittery after that.
When I got to my campsite, the manager remembered me and my e-mail about my ride for Caleb. She told me to camp for free!!! Very kind and thoughtful to remember me from 2 months ago!! Thanks Linda. Later that day I am in Thompson Falls and I go to this little place called Lil Bears. MAN!!! It was only a sandwich with some fruit, but I am serious, it was a work of art. It was also the best lunch I ever had as far as taste and appearance goes. I was having a nice conversation with a retired couple before they left the place. They asked a lot of questions about Caleb and me, I really enjoyed talking to them. When I asked for my bill, the waitress told me the couple had just paid for my dinner. She said they asked her not to tell me until after they had already left. WOW!! I was speachless!!!! I told several people about this because I was unable to thank them. So, if you guys are out there and you are reading this blog, thank you very much.
Stop # 8 Dixon/ Arlee, MT I was suppose to stay in Dixon, but Dixon is smaller than it's name, no joke. One little dive bar, three building, and maybe ten houses??? So I rode another 15 miles and went to Arlee, MT. Good move, this town has a least 500 people. I stayed at the Pow Wow Park???? It is all open and you put a tent where you want. On July 1st the place will be packed with festival goers for a week long celebration of Native Indian customs. I really wish I could have been there for that. Last night in my tent, I could hear people banging drums and chanting the high pitched chants of aayyyyyyyyayyaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy, it was cool. I had an amazing view of the Mission Mountains ( rockies) and great weather, sweet day!!
Stop #9 Lolo, MT ( think Missoula) Well, road construction got me today. Luckily my friends dad could take me past all of it. Thanks Mr. Cluphf, you saved my butt!!!! Next stop is Salmon Lake State Park.
I was suppose to take a day off there on Wednesday, but I have decided to take a day off early here. In Missoula Montana they have a mountain called the M. It's a good hike with lots of swithchbacks. I am going to do it in the morning. As most of you know, tomorrow is the one year date of our friend Calebs last day here on earth??!! It is going to be a tough day for Caleb's family and closest friends. I have been thinking about that little man even more in the last couple of days. It has been difficult, there has already been lots of adversity, but it has also been
peaceful!! I hope you can all experience some peace on Tuesday. Go out of your way to be extra kind. Hold a door open for someone. Tell someone you really care about how much they mean to you. Forgive a friend, forget it and move on so you can strengthen that relationship. Do anything for someone else and you too will feel better. Thank you all for your comments!!!!!

Hello again.
Well I am in Harrington, WA. population 496. This is an amazing, beautiful little town. It is hard to describe it, but trust me there still are little towns out there without a single stop light!
I was suppose to stay at a little church in town but was unable to make contact with my "contact" person. Funny!! So I was going to a little park to relax and I met Mark. He was driving through town and saw my gear and asked if I had everything I neede? I told him about the church situation and he told me to bring my things on over and put my tent up at his house. Wow, thanks little angel!! So Mark lives right next door to the Catholic Church in town. Mark has two kids and a wife who works in Spokane. Thanks for lunch Mark. Great people, thanks for being so generous!!!
Well today was a great day. The weather was perfect and the roads were clear all day.
Wednesday I head to my Aunt Betty's near Spokane, WA. It's called Green Acres, yep, seriously!! It's the place to be, farm living is the life for me, land spreading out so far and wide...
I'm going to let you finish on your own. So I will be taking a day off the bike on Thursday and having a visit with family. I will post more soon... Take care, cya!!!!

Thanks for the great comments to the last post, I appreciate all the support you are giving me!!
There are some big mountains out here!!!! When I got to my camp site the campground host starts telling me that it hasn't rained in a month. Guess what? It poured last night while I was camping. Isn't that funny? Luckily it didn't rain until after midnight. Thank goodness for the kindness of strangers. Thanks Jessica!!!! She took me past some major construction and dangerous areas today. Right now I am at he Methodist Church in Quincy. Thanks to Keith the youth pastor, who is allowing me to stay in the basement of the church tonight!! Very cool!!!!! Special thanks to Christine. Girl, you can cook!!! That was an amazing meal and the peach cobbler was excellent!!! Thanks for doing that for me!!! So, I am off to Harrington in the morning. It's a long ways away but the weather is "suppose" to be ok. The views out here are amazing. My phone camera does not take great pictures, but I will continue to snap away.

Well I am in Skykomish. I rode about 50 miles and found a great little motel called the Cascades Inn. Great food, great people and an amazing view. Today I head up to Lake Wenatchee. Here is the scary news. I almost got hit a couple of times. Not sure why but they ended up to close for me. Dragging the trailer is tough!!! Flats no problem but hills, man!!!!!!
I am having a hard time eating, not sure why but I know I have to consume calories. I cramped up last night a little, ouchh. It's cold and rainy here too, that stinks for cycling. I miss my family too!!!! I had no idea how much until this morning when I awoke on Fathers Day. WOW!!! The next stop after Lake Wenatchee is Quincy, WA. I will try to write when I get there. I hope the sun pops out, that will make me feel a lot better. Jen tells me it's hot and miserable there?
OK, on with the adventure. I will be sharing everything I am feeling and seeing so be prepared for highs and lows in my blogs. I hope you all have a wonderful Fathers Day Weekend!!! Cya

Well I made it. It looks like I brought the rain too? They have not had rain in 30 something days and well guess what? It's raining with rain in the forcast for the whole weekend. Oh well, I don't mind, I just thought that was kinda funny. I was greated at the airport by Andy and his amazing family. Thanks Axel and Zane for driving me all over the place today with mom. We went for a 30 mile drive towards the Cascade Mountains and WOW!!!! I am ready to go now. I am going to start Saturday instead of Sunday. I will ride about 45 miles and camp somewhere? I was suppose to ride 90 miles on Sunday so this will help break up that first 90 miles for me.
So it's on, here we go!!!!!! Keep checking back I will blog as much as I can while out on the road.

My bike made it to Tim's Bike Shop in Everett, WA. It's going to be built today and be ready by Friday. I plan on riding the 6 miles to Andy's house (brother of a friend) to make sure everything is right? By right, all I mean is dialed in for my riding style. I know the bike shop will do a great job of rebuilding my bicycle!!!!!!Big shout out to those guys for helping me out, thanks!!!!!!!! Well, I hope it's not going to be as rainy on my trip as it has been here in the St.Louis area!!!!! Oh, well you just never know??? Part of the adventure is the overcoming of the adversity.
Rain, wind, heat, cold, bike problems, crazy motorist, food, water, and Lord knows what else??? Some people think I am a little crazy? I'm not, I'm sane. But I was crazy about that little boy. You were too if you knew him! It's not attention I am after, I am just wanting to bring attention to Caleb's memory. His toughness and mental attitude will forever be a part of my life.
I hope my effort this summer inspires others. Thanks to everyone who has offered words of encouragement, made a finacial donation, or said a prayer for me!! Thank you all.

Well, the time is coming!! I have been riding 40 and 50 miles each time out. I feel like I am getting stronger and I am ready to get started. I have to pack up my bike on Tuesday. The guys at The Cyclery in Edwardsville are going to help me mail it out to Tim's Bike Shop in Everett, WA. I have already mailed out all my supplies and now it's just a matter of time. I got a nice offer out of the blue from a fellow cyclist and his wife from Spokane WA for a place to stay and a meal!!

Well, the bowling fundraiser was a big success. We managed to raise $1,300.00 for the Caleb Zarzecki Scholarship Fund.

I hope everyone enjoyed the Easter break. Our family had a wonderful weekend. I hope all of you did too. I also got a chance to ride in between rain. 25 miles on Saturday and 40 on Sunday.
We have set up an account at (FCB) First Collinsville Bank. This fund will hold all donations made in behalf of the 2012 Caleb Zarzecki Scholarship Fund. Since the ALA canceled the organized ride, I have decided to create a scholarship fund to be given out in Caleb's memory to someone in the graduating class of 2012. Please donate to a wonderful cause. You can send your donation to any FCB in the name of the Caleb Zarzecki Scholarship Fund. New project

Hello everyone and welcome to the new plan. I am in the process of putting the Seattle to St.Louis ride together. I am going to fund raise for a Caleb Zarzecki scholarship fund. With lots of input from Robin Zarzecki and her family, we plan on starting a 2012 scholarship to honor Caleb in what would have been his senior year. I feel disappointed my ride was canceled, but I also know that I can over come the adversity and disappointment. I told my PE classes about it today and they too were upset. I told them "life is adversity" " you can crumble or you can overcome."

Hi. Well, the disappointment of having the ride canceled is still burning. Just for the record, they needed 40 riders and we only had 17. It's the first time since they started this ride 10 years ago that they had to cancel. I want everyone to know, I am still committed to doing something!!!
I am in the process of looking into all my options. I am going to keep fund raising on my own. I am going to have the May 16th bowling night still. I am researching setting up a scholarship in Caleb Z.'s name at THS with the money I collect. I will be posting every other day for a few weeks to let people know exactly what is going on.

Warm weather

Hello all
Warm weather at last!!!!!! My elbow is feeling stronger and the sun is warm. Yesterday (Sunday) I got outside on my bike for the first time this year and rode 55 miles. It felt great. I am so sick of riding in a stationary trainer, I can't even tell you. It's suppose to be nice again today and I look forward to getting out there as soon as I can get home from work.

Car crash

Ouch!!!!!
Yep, I got injured this weekend. I was driving through Troy Saturday on the way to pick up my sons new bike. A young driver in his McDonalds uniform pulled out in front of me and wham,
T-boned him. My elbow swelled up and I had to rest it for several days. The weather is going to be really nice Thursday so I am going to get 25-30 miles in if the elbow holds up???? Wish me luck!!! I am looking forward to some nice weather, how about you?
